| Seasonal Botanical Field Technician |
In support of the Buys & Associates biological staff, seasonal field technicians will conduct botanical surveys in remote field locations throughout eastern Utah. Field surveys may include threatened and endangered plant surveys, noxious weed inventories, reclamation monitoring surveys, and vegetative site assessments. This position will require extensive travel, long hours in the field, and hiking through difficult terrain and sometimes in adverse weather conditions (including extreme temperatures). Successful applicants will work closely with all members of a team to complete required tasks efficiently, paying close attention to detail and survey protocol. Technicians will reliably locate and navigate themselves to project areas; thoroughly document data on field forms; carry equipment and/or supplies, weighing up to 40 pounds; and maintain field equipment.
Job assignments would be based out of the Buys & Associates office in Vernal, UT. Per diem will be provided to cover food and other incidentals. Lodging will also be provided. This is a temporary position to begin in mid-March, with work intermittent through the summer.
Successful candidates will pass a pre-hire drug screening and physical.
Required Qualifications
- Prior biological field experience related to the above mentioned botanical surveys (e.g.; threatened and endangered plant surveys, noxious weed inventories, reclamation monitoring surveys, and vegetative site assessments), or similar studies.
- Ability to identify common western rangeland vegetation.
- Navigational skills and experience with GPS, topographic maps, and compass.
- Ability to work efficiently as a team member.
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
BA/BS in biological sciences or similar field.
- Proficiency in using a botanical key to identify plants.
- Previous experience working in Utah, Colorado, or surrounding states.
- Experience in the operation of 4x4 trucks, trailer towing, and ATV operation.
- Familiarity with GIS and/or mapping software.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
Salary: $15/hour

| Environmental Planner/ NEPA Specialist |
Buys & Associates, Inc. seeks a highly motivated scientist with an environmental planning background, including professional experience writing NEPA documents. The position will entail preparing resource-specific sections of EAs and EISs pertaining to one or more the following disciplines:
- Visual Resources
- Socio-Economics
- Transportation
- Recreation
- Land Use
- Range Management
The successful candidate will have experience in developing affected environment impact analyses, mitigation sections of NEPA documents, and will provide support to NEPA project managers.
Qualifications include:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, natural resources management, environmental planning, or a related field.
- Technical writing skills.
- Expertise in the collection and analysis of data.
- Expertise in impact analysis.
- 2-5 years of experience in NEPA documentation and reporting.
- Editing skills and experience.
- The ability to work effectively as an interdisciplinary team member
- The ability to work effectively with federal, state, and local agencies.
Additional experience a plus:
- Environmental justice.
- Demonstrated experience in federal and state environmental laws and regulations related to the Rocky Mountain region.
- Excellent organization, communication, and management skills, and the ability to see projects through to completion.
- Project experience with federal agencies in the Rocky Mountain region.
Salary: Negotiable, based upon educational credentials & related work experience.
