Soil and Groundwater Investigation

Soil and Groundwater Investigations conducted by B&A are designed to determine the existence of contamination. Investigations are targeted to identify contaminants detrimental to health and the environment. Type, extent and source of contamination are studied and routine field practices are reviewed to determine the impact of operations on groundwater, as well as the appropriate remedial activity. Remediation may be undertaken to either remove or treat the source of contamination.

Groundwater Investigations, Sample Analysis, Monitor Well Installation
(Confidential Client), Oil and Gas Production Company, New Mexico

A CO2 extraction plant was initially built and operated by a service company as a processing plant for coal bed methane gas produced from the Fruitland formation. Our client purchased the plant from the service company and assumed control of operations. During the property transfer, Buys & Associates was contracted to perform a site characterization study to collect baseline environmental data and evaluate the nature and extent of potential subsurface and groundwater contamination resulting from past plant activities.

Buys & Associates performed the site characterization in two phases and supervised the well installation program, surveying, and soil and ground water sampling. We performed all sampling activities using hand auger drilling techniques and polybutyrate-lined drive samplers designed to collect undisturbed samples. The client was fully satisfied.

Soil/Waste Remediation, Sample Analysis, Regulatory Research
(Confidential Client), Oil Exploration and Production Company, Denver, Colorado

A three-acre Land Treatment Area (LTA) located in Wyoming was designed and constructed for the degradation, transformation and immobilization of petroleum hydrocarbon wastes. The project included the excavation and transportation of contaminated wastes and soils to the LTA. The petroleum hydrocarbon wastes were excavated from two pits that were used for the disposal of scrap metal, trash and waste oil generated from the production field and the gas plant. Approximately 11,200 cubic yards of contaminated material were excavated and transported to the LTA.

Buys & Associates designed and constructed the LTA in accordance with the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality, Solid Waste Division and RCRA requirements. The major design elements of the Land Treatment Area included the construction of berms, an internal leachate collection impoundment and compacted clay liner. The project also included the sampling and analysis of on-site ground water monitoring wells to determine the effectiveness of the source removal. Quarterly sampling was conducted for one year after excavations were completed.
